Growing the innovation ecosystem for food-graDe biomanufacturing

Deborah stepped in as Project Lead for UC ANR’s The Plant at a pivotal moment in the initiative’s development, bringing immediate structure, momentum, and market-facing strategy to what was previously an early-stage concept. Upon assuming leadership, Deborah rapidly organized a cross-sector team of experts, establishing a clear vision and execution framework to move The Plant toward near-term operational readiness. Under her direction, The Plant was formalized around integrated verticals: Biomanufacturing, focused on fermentation, cell culture, and microbial protein production at pilot scale Kitchen, Sensory & Food Processing, supporting ingredient development, packaging, and consumer testing Greenhouse and Controlled Environment Agriculture, enabling advanced growing systems and molecular farming. Each vertical was intentionally structured to bridge research and commercialization, accelerating translation from lab to market. Deborah also led the team through early partner outreach, facility evaluation strategy, financial modeling, and governance planning—positioning The Plant as a scalable regional innovation platform rather than a single-purpose facility. Her leadership has materially advanced the project from concept into a fundable, implementation-ready regional biomanufacturing asset.

Transformational Change Management in a Human Safety Testing Organization

A national toxicology testing laboratory faced a daunting challenge: transitioning from traditional animal-based methods to New Alternative Methods (NAMs). This shift promised innovation and alignment with evolving regulatory landscapes but triggered widespread fears among employees. Concerns over potential job losses, a widening skills gap, and a lack of trust in leadership's transparency threatened to derail the initiative. To address this, the organization brought in Deborah, a seasoned biologist and project leader with over 25 years of experience across life science R&D functions. Deborah’s expertise in managing cross-functional teams and fostering organizational agility made her the perfect fit for this transformation. Deborah initiated a one-week immersive session for employees, focusing on change management and agility. Through interactive workshops, employees explored the value of openness to change, stakeholder management, and effective communication. Deborah emphasized the importance of an innovation mindset, showing employees how NAMs could enhance their roles rather than eliminate them. Tailored training programs and resource planning were highlighted as important next steps to ensure everyone felt included in the transition. Simultaneously, Deborah worked closely with the leadership team to refine their communication strategy and rebuild trust. She facilitated crafting a clear mission and vision tied to NAMs, aligning these with organizational values. Deborah introduced high-performance team structures based on empowerment and transformational influence rather than rigid hierarchy. By the end of her engagement, the organization had a renewed sense of purpose. Employees felt heard, leadership was transparent, and the shift to NAMs transformed from a source of anxiety into an opportunity for growth and innovation.

Setting new standards for eco-conscious construction while restoring a hillside

The town of Vallejo, CA, embarked on a critical project to restore a hillside damaged by erosion, where the adjacent roadway bordered a sensitive natural wetland. The excavation work required careful planning and execution to meet strict environmental impact requirements. Vivian, a seasoned environmental consultant with extensive experience in biological monitoring and project oversight, was brought on board for a one-month assignment to ensure the project's success. Vivian’s role involved continuous biological monitoring of the construction activities to protect the wetland's delicate ecosystem. Her expertise enabled her to identify key risks, such as sediment runoff and potential disruption to local wildlife habitats. She worked closely with the excavation company to implement real-time adjustments, including the installation of silt fences and adjustments to equipment placement, minimizing ecological impact without halting progress. Vivian’s detailed communication with external stakeholders, including local regulatory agencies and conservation groups, was a standout contribution. She organized weekly on-site walkthroughs with these parties to ensure transparency and foster trust. Her ability to explain technical measures in relatable terms helped bridge gaps between the construction team and environmental advocates, reducing tensions and promoting collaboration. Thanks to Vivian’s dedication, the project not only met but exceeded compliance standards, ensuring the wetland’s preservation while restoring the hillside efficiently. Her ability to align diverse parties behind a common goal was instrumental in delivering a sustainable outcome.
